It is Henry Alfred Kissinger who once remarked; "Any fact that needs to be disclosed should be put out now or as quickly as possible, because otherwise this bleeding will not end." Of course, he was not speaking of Zimbabwe but he might as well hav been! After news broke that the Monday meeting between president Robert Mugabe (ZANU-PF), Morgan Tsvangirai (MDC-T) and Arthur Mutambara (MDC-M) had yielded nothing in terms of breaking the prevailing political impasse, the tone was set for a depressing week ahead - on the political field at least!
In Sport, the Zimbabwe Warriors advanced to the semi-finals of the COSAFA Cup and the national cricket team beat Bangladesh in the opening match of an ODI (One Day International) series. Both events appear to have been well co-ordinated and are even being well attended by the general public. The site of a functioning Zimbabwe.
On the streets of Harare, however, there is a certain amount of fear. On Tuesday, there we resports of an attempted kidnap of an MDC official, Edith Mashayire right on the streets of Harare as she made her way to work. This is how the MDC-T described the incident on their website:
"Four armed men today tried to kidnap the MDC’s security administrator, Edith Mashayire in central Harare.
Mashayire was on her way to work at the MDC headquarters, Harvest House when four men driving a grey Isuzu twin cab KB300 [registration number withheld by ZIP] suddenly blocked her way at the corner of Inez Terrace and George Silundika. The four men then produced guns and told her that she was under arrest.
Mashayire started screaming as the armed men assaulted her all over her body with the weapons. Upon noticing that a huge crowd was forming, the men sped off along Inez Terrace Road."
And with that drowned the hope that had been set by the prospect of the GPA principals meeting on Monday. So it is yet another week of confusion as to where this country is going or what is going to come out of this mess. While there is no clear-cut answer to what tommorow hold, the blood that is dripping in this country speaks not only pain and discouragement but fear.
